Nietzsche clarifies Bergson’s notion of intuition by putting it in the context of history. His point is that history, be it individual or communal, is useful up to a certain point, but that all truly great deeds are done when the agent, if only for a moment, forgets all that he has known and becomes “unhistorical.”

Admittedly, we find a similar doctrine already in Schopenhauer. But when Schopenhauer speaks of will-to-life, he considers will as a thing in itself, and life as a phenomenon. Deleuze’s best known study on Bergson, Bergsonism, came out in 1966, which is four years later than his volume on Nietzsche and Philosophy, published in 1962. At least from a chronological point of view, it would then seem that Nietzsche’s influence on Deleuze precedes that of Bergson, and not the reverse. I wish to question this point.

As both Bergson and Nietzsche stated, through divergent lines of thought, we are all inbuilt Platonist: we mistake the concepts for reality. We are especially prone to geometry, mistaking the fluid reality for the motion of stable things in a pure geometric space. In reality, things and space are one entity: movement/becoming/change.

Bergson’s main argument about free will was concerning the three ‘states’ of time we commonly use, that is: the past, present and future. While we all seem to think that the past ‘was’, the present ‘is’ and the future ‘will be’, Bergson saw things differently.

Henri-Louis Bergson (French: ; 18 October 1859 – 4 January 1941) was a French philosopher who was influential in the tradition of continental philosophy, especially during the first half of the 20th century until the Second World War. The bringing together of Nietzsche and Bergson, which may appear strange, seems justified by the fact that the two philosophers were the first to understand life in terms of will. Admittedly, we find a similar doctrine already in Schopenhauer. But when Schopenhauer speaks of will-to-life, he considers will as a thing in itself, and life as a phenomenon. It is true that will, inasmuch as it is Keith Ansell-Pearson is a British philosopher specialising in the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze. He is currently Professor of Philosophy at Warwick University. Ansell-Pearson is the author of numerous books including Germinal Life, Viroid Life and Philosophy and the Adventure of the Virtual.
